BBC America Cancels “Copper” After Two Seasons

I tried “Copper,” I honestly gave you a good go. We went on a binge watch of 4 episodes together.  But I am STILL bored. Apparently I am not the only one either. BBC has announced their cancellation of the period drama after just two seasons. (How it even got a second season, I am not sure.)

“Copper” was said to have modest ratings and was faring decently against the networks other original series, “Orphan Black.” Yet BBC has decided to not pursue the series any longer.

Created by Fontana and Rokos, Copper was produced for BBC America by Shaw Media and Cineflix Studios. It is set in 1860s New York City during the American Civil War and stars Tom Weston-Jones as an Irish immigrant policeman, or “copper,” who patrols the Five Points neighborhood.

“Last year we had one foot in this gritty story of New York in the 1860s and one foot in a procedural crime show format,” Fontana told The Hollywood Reporter earlier in the summer.

BBC America general manager Perry Simon, said,

“Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved. The opportunity to work with Tom FontanaBarry LevinsonWill RokosThomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. Their vision to retell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America’s programming. After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story.”
