“Better Call Saul” Coming to Netflix in 2014 After AMC Debut

Netflix and Sony Pictures Television have partnered up to make the “Breaking Bad” spinoff series, “Better Call Saul” available exclusively to streaming members in Europe and Latin America shortly after its airing in the U.S. beginning in 2014.

For viewers in the U.S. and Canada, the complete first season of “Better Call Saul” will be available to Netflix members after its season finale on AMC Networks. The deal makes Netflix the exclusive subscription television service in all its territories for both the new series and the original.

“Better Call Saul” will feature Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. The series is co-created and executive produced by “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan. The show will follow mall-based super lawyer Saul Goodman in the years before he became Walter White’s attorney. From parking tickets to mass murder, from slip-and-fall to bond fraud, Saul handles it all.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer, said,

“‘Breaking Bad’ is widely recognized as one of the great TV experiences in this new golden age of television. It has also proven very popular with Netflix subscribers around the world. This spin-off promises to continue its tradition of powerful storytelling. We are proud to be in business with Sony Pictures Television to bring Saul Goodman to our subscribers around the world.”

Netflix Orders New Original Series

The age of Netflix Original Series have been great, I think we can all admit. (Except for “Hemlock Grove.” I mean C’MON.) Monday, the company announced their next original series endeavor, the currently untitled project from the creators of “Damages.”

The upcoming series will have a 13 episode run and will be produced by Sony Pictures Television. It comes from the great minds of Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler (KZK). According to Netflix, the show will focus on a family of adult siblings whose secrets and scars come to light with the return of their black sheep brother.

“We were spellbound after hearing Todd, Glenn and Daniel’s pitch and knew Netflix was the perfect home for this suspenseful family drama that is going to have viewers on the edge of their seats,” said Netflix original content vp Cindy Holland. “Their work on Damages was truly ahead of its time and we’re proud to be bringing our viewers this upcoming series.”

Sony TV president of programming and production Jamie Erlicht, added,

“The guys worked so hard to come up with the right idea after the success of Damages. It took almost a year to fully develop the pitch, and their patience paid off with the incredible reaction in the community, especially at Netflix, the perfect home for this show.”

Netflix has produced great original series like “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black” not to mention bringing my favorite show of all time, “Arrested Development.” (I am still disappointed with “Hemlock Grove though.) I cannot wait to see how their next original series turns out and from the description, I’m sure it will be a doozy.

The news series is set to begin production in early 2014.
