A few months ago it was reported that the upcoming reboot of The Mummy from Universal Studios was on hold after the director, Len Wiseman, dropped out. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Andres Muschietti is currently in talks to take over the project as director.

Muschietti is most known for his recent film, Mama, which was acclaimed by fans and critics while performing well at the box office. It went on to gross  over $146 million worldwide. The script came from Jon Spaihts, the writer behind Prometheus. Sean Daniels, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce.

The Mummy is a part of four different franchises all focusing on an ancient Egyptian priest accidentally resurrected, who brings with him a powerful curse, and the efforts of heroic archeologists to stop him. The original series, premiering in 1932, featured six installments, starring iconic horror actors Boris Karloff in the original only as Imhotep with Lon Chaney Jr. and Tom Tyler as Kharis and lastly Eddie Parker who played Klaris, a cousin of Kharis. It was later remade in 1959 by the British Hammer Film Productions.  In 1999, Stephen Sommers wrote and directed a remake of The Mummy, loosely based on the original film of 1932. It had three installments and later produced a spinoff franchise called The Scorpion King.

Currently, there is no casting news about the reboot. All that has been announced is that this project will be set in modern-day unlike the previous films.
