The (awesome) 1995 film, 12 Monkeys is heading to SyFy has an upcoming television series. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the project is in development with “Terra Nova” writers Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas who are also attached to pen the pilot.

The time travel tale was inspired by the 1962 short film from Chris Marker called “La Jetée.” It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where a convict named James Cole volunteers to travel back in time in hopes of learning how the world fell to a deadly virus. The film starred Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt, with Christopher Plummer and David Morse in supporting roles. Pitt was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and won a Golden Globe for his performance. The film also won and was nominated for various categories at the Saturn Awards.

SyFy has hired Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle, both of whom produced the original film, to work on the 90 minute pilot currently in the works. Jon Cassar is also attached to direct.

There is no word yet on whether the series will be a direct remake of the original film or possibly be a prequel, sequel, or parallel tale of the events in the film. There has also been no information regarding who is expected to star in the project.
