Over the weekend, the animated films dominating the box office were cast aside in favor of the terrifying film, The Conjuring. The film, coming from Insidious creator James Wan, is based  on an early case file by supernatural investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren and starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lily Taylor and Ron Livingston. Since its opening, it has grossed an estimated $41.5 million after making $17 million on Friday.

The previous box office victor, Despicable Me 2 fell to second place with $25 million. This week it is down 43% while bringing its total to $276 million. It is still considered the third-highest grossing movie of the year behind Man of Steel, but it’s quickly catching up and should be #2 for the year and could hit that mark in the next week.

Other wide releases this weekend fared even worse. DreamWorks animated picture, Turbo, opened this past Wednesday and only grossed $9.7 million in its first two days. Over the three-day weekend, it added another $21.5 million. Grown Ups 2 dropped to fourth place with $20 million and a total gross of $79.5 million after ten days in theaters. Even Red 2, did not pick up much traffic over the weekend. The sequel opened worse than its original movie (back in 2010) with $18.5 million in just over 3,000 theaters or $6,100 per site.

In 6th place this week, is Guillermo del Toro’s monsters fighting robots film, Pacific Rim. It fell from third place, a staggering 57% drop with just under $16 million for the weekend and $68.2 million total.
