Most of us are anxiously awaiting the consumer release for Oculus Rift, it was announced that the technology will focus on PC and mobile devices. Meaning that consoles will not see the virtual reality, head-mounted display, at least not anytime soon.

Oculus VR Ceo Brendan Iribe recently told EDGE that,

“I love consoles but internally we’re a lot more excited about where mobile’s going to go, and being able to plug it right into a next gen cellphone,” Iribe said. “Those things are almost doubling every year, compared to a console that’s just stuck it out for eight years.”

Iribe also commented that he is hoping Oculus Rift will be on the market by next year though he is not making any promises.

“We don’t want to announce any dates because frankly we just don’t know when it’s going to be really ready,” Iribe said. “You have the form factor, HD, motion blur…we don’t know how long that will take.”

Currently, developer kits of technology are being shipped out while the consumer ones are still being created. The Oculus developer kit was an initial version financed by a Kickstarter campaign which sought to get the initial Oculus Rift into the hands of developers to begin integration of the device into their games.

A consumer-oriented ‘Oculus Rift 2.0’ will be aimed at a general market and feature improved components. Improved head tracking, weapon tracking, 1080p resolution, and wireless operation are some of the features under consideration for the Rift 2.0. Palmer Luckey has said that such a Head-mounted display (HMD) should be possible in 2014. At the 2013 E3 conference, a 1080p version of the Rift was shown.
