Starz Renews Ash vs. Evil Dead for a Third Season

The second season of the Starz series, “Ash vs. The Evil Dead” has just premiered and the network has already decided to renew it for a third season!

According to a report from Deadline, the second season had a considerable increase in viewership over the first season. The season 2 premiere episode had about 733,000 viewers, a 14 percent increase over its season one premiere. But probably the biggest factor in the renewal is that the series went up 63 percent in veiwersgip overall in adults 18-49, which is usually the most coveted demographic for ad sales.

The next episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead airs Sunday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. EST on Starz. You can watch the trailer for season two below.

Netflix Series “Friends From College” Adds Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, and Fred Savage

Netflix’s upcoming series that surely will be insanely successful has added some key cast members that have made it even more enticing. The series is titled “Friends From College” and actors Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Annie Parisse, Nat Faxon, Fred Savage, and Jae Suh Park have signed on to play friends from college.

The college will be a famous little school outside of Boston, no not Tufts. These friends from college all went to Harvard. Officially it’s described as following “a group of friends who went to Harvard together and are now facing down their forties.”

The series will be written by Nick Stoller (Neighbors, The Grinder) and Francesca Delbanco are writing the series. Stoller will direct all eight episodes.

“Friends From College” doesn’t have a premiere date yet but we are all awaiting on bated breath. The first season will consist of eight half-hour episodes.

New to Netflix Streaming – September 2016

September is almost here and Netflix has lots of new additions for us on their streaming service. This is one of the BEST months I have seen in a long time. In September we get ALL of the Jaws movies which is going to make for once awesome marathon day. They have also added “Shameless” season 5 and 6, “New Girl” season 5, and “Luther” season 4.

However, the most anticipated additions are the sixth season of “The Walking Dead,” the first season “Marvel’s Luke Cage” and the second season of “Scream: the TV series.”

There is some bad news, unfortunately. All five seasons of “Fringe” is leaving. So you better find it on DVD or something.

Hulu Scores the Streaming Rights to Community Season 6

Hulu already has streaming rights to the first 5 seasons but it was announced recently that they have nabbed the rights to stream the sixth season of “Community.”

This is a huge win as the sixth season of the series actually streamed on Yahoo Screen (something most of us never got around to figuring out.) Now, the series will be complete thanks to Hulu purchasing the rights.

Now someone just needs to produce the movie and we will all be set.

First Look at the Return of “Black Mirror”

After it was announced that Netflix would pick up the dystopian science fiction series, “Black Mirror,” fans have been waiting for any news of its season 3 premiere. Last week, Netflix answered with the release of several photos from the upcoming season.

In one set of photos from the episode titled “San Junipero” we see Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis looking perfectly 80’s glam. Netflix described this episode as ’80s-centric, and revealed that it would be directed by Owen Harris.

The other set comes from the episode “Nosedive.” The episode was written by Rashida Jones and Mike Schur (of Parks and Recreation) and directed by Joe Wright (Pride and PrejudiceAtonement). This episode stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve, and James Norton. “Nosedive” is “a social satire about identity in the social-media age. It’s kind of like a cheerful pastel nightmare, that story.”

Mr. Robot Renewed for Season 3.0

In a very smart move, USA has officially announced that “Mr. Robot” will return for a third season. The series was recently nominated for six Primetime Emmys and consistently voted one of the best shows on the air.

Mr. Robot follows Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), a cyber-security engineer with mental health problems, who becomes involved in the underground hacker group fsociety, after being recruited by their leader (Christian Slater). Following the events of fsociety’s five/nine hack on multi-national company Evil Corp, the second season explores the consequences of that attack as well as the illusion of control.

The series also stars Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallstrom, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer and Stephanie Corneliussen.

Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said,

“We couldn’t be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist, and been honored as one of the best dramas on television. Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network. We can’t wait to see where Sam Esmail and the entire brilliant Robot team take us next.”

Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions added,

“Being the home studio for this wonderful, completely original show is an exhilarating experience. Sam and company just keep taking it to another level. We can’t wait to get going on Season 3… as soon as we finish Season 2!”

Season 3 of “Mr. Robot” is expected to air in 2017.

Netflix’s Stranger Things is More Popular Than House of Cards, Making a Murderer

The Netflix Original Series, “Stranger Things,” has taken the world by storm. It was insanely popular the week it premiered and has remained an intense talking point ever since. Interestingly, despite its popularity, Netflix has yet to officially confirm a second season – which everyone seems to be sure is going to happen. Though,  CEO Reed Hastings has said, “We would be dumb not to [renew the show].”

And yes, they would have to be dumb not to renew because it was just revealed that the first season of “Stranger Things” has officially become more popular than Netflix originals like House of Cards and Making a Murderer in terms of viewership.

According to reports from Business Insider, a survey from SymphonyAM (Symphony Advanced Media) found that Stranger Things’s first season was the third-most-watched TV show on Netflix, following Fuller House and Orange is the New Black. (Though, really “Fuller House” was ahead of everything else?? Why?)

When the sci fi thriller had only been on the streaming service for a mere 16 days, 8.2 million people had tuned in, making it more viewed than House of Cards, Narcos, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Making A Murderer.

However, it should be noted that the data from SymphonyAM is disputed as Netflix notoriously does not release or track their viewership data. Not to mention that Netflix has  accused SymphonyAM of being “remarkably inaccurate” in the past. But considering what the buzz was like around the proverbial water cooler following the show’s premiere, I wouldn’t be surprised if it really was one of the most watched shows during the first two weeks.

Currently, the state of the show’s second season is a mystery, though the producers have commented that they are ready for another season with loads more story to tell. \

Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah ABSOLUTELY SURPRISINGLY Won’t Return for SNL’s 42nd Season

In a shocking report from Deadline, it has been confirmed that NBC has not renewed the contracts of cast members Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah for the 42nd season of Saturday Night Live.

Pharoah and Killam joined SNL in 2010. They both signed a seven year contract yet were not renewed for the final year of their contract. Killam was equally surprised that his contract was not renewed and said in an interview Uproxx yesterday that he thought this coming season would be his last.

“I was there for six years. I have not been anywhere in my life for six years. I don’t know that the end of something that you’ve committed that much time and energy to is ever going to feel “great” … You sign for seven years, so I had one more year. I had sort of had it in my head I would make this upcoming year my last year, but then heard they weren’t going to pick up my contract. I was never given a reason why, really. I can assume until the cows come home.”

He also added later,

I honestly don’t know what happened on the other side, but I do know we had expressed I have work on this film and in bonding this picture, that has to get cleared with SNL. And then [another offer] came up. I wasn’t going to have to take any time off to do it, but it was a thing that they would have had to okay.

Pharoah on the other hand, hasn’t commented on the contract-severing decision, but also has two films in the works— animated family comedy Sing and animated adult comedy The Adventures of Drunky. He is currently in the midst of a summer stand-up tour.

While the ending was sudden and unexpected, it seems Killam is at least grateful his time on SNL. He said,

“It’s always hard and sad to say goodbye, but it feels like an appropriate time and I am so, so grateful to have been a cast member on Saturday Night Live.”

The Simpsons to Air First-Ever Hour-long Episode

This September 25th, something we have never seen before is going to happen. “The Simpsons” is premiering its first hour long episode. For the premiere episode of the show’s 28th season, fans are getting the first ever hour long episode.

The hour long episode was first announced during Fox’s TCA Summer Press Tour when CEO of Fox Dana Walden announced that the show would run the episode (including commercial time) in January of 2017. The episode is a “hip-hop homage to The Great Gatsby,” according to Entertainment Weekly. The episode, titled “The Great Phatsby,” is about Mr. Burns’ friendship with hip-hop mogul Jay G.

According to the press releases, Homer Simpson will narrate the episode, like Nick Carraway did in The Great Gatsby. Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) will also guest star for the episode. Jim Beanz will create new songs for the episode, including a betrayal and a revenge rap track.

In the episode, Mr. Burns is betrayed by Jay G and enlists Bart and Homer to seek revenge. Lisa also gets a wealthy boyfriend and Marge opens a boutique store.

“This was just going to be a regular episode, but the table read went so well, in a fit of passion and excitement and ambition and excess, we decided to supersize it,” said Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman to EW. “And we haven’t done a huge amount of stories in the world of hip-hop and rap culture, so we just went for it.”

Jon Stewart Will Return to TV With Animated HBO Show This Fall

Jon Stewart may be super cynical after years on “The Daily Show” watching the world crumble but he is coming back to television! Sort of!

This fall, Stewart returns but this time to HBO and in an animation deal. HBO Program Director Casey Bloys confirmed the deal and explained the show’s unique format in a recent press conference during a recent Television Critics Association (TCA) gathering.

While he did not confirm a release date, he did say maybe September or October.

“He is establishing an animation studio. He wants to get material out on a daily basis. The idea is that it’s an animated parody of a cable news network in an Onion-like portal,” said Bloys. “It will be his voice, in his actual voice, and his tone.”

According to the reports about the show that released last year, these shorts will arrive on HBO GO and NOW throughout the day. Stewart’s program will also feature a companion written component as well. Once this and the shorts take off, fans can expect a half-hour traditional show on the network.
