Willem Dafoe Will Voice Ryuk the Shinigami in Netflix’s Death Note

https-%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F164431%2Funnamed

According to a report from Mashable, Ryuk the Shinigami will be voiced by Willem Dafoe! The notable actor has signed on to provide the voice the otherworldly creature in Adam Wingard’s upcoming Death Note film.

Ryuk is a Shinigami that created the titular book and follows main character, Light Turner as he uses the book. Shinigami follow other people with other Death Notes as well but none use the book like Light which intrigues Ryuk.

The movie is based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. There is also a popular anime series based on the manga. The manga follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

Death Note is currently in production stars Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Turner; Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys, The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton; Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton, Dope, Short Term 12) as “L”; Paul Nakauchi (Alpha and Omega) as Watari; and Shea Whigham (Agent Carter, Boardwalk Empire) as James Turner.

The movie will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017.

Jillian Bell and Channing Tatum to Lead Gender Swapped Splash Reboot

channing_tatum_jillian_bell_split_h_2016

I kind of LOVE this. I can’t tell if this casting is retribution after the ridiculous misogynist outrage for  the Ghostbusters reboot but regardless I love it.

Today, it was announced that the iconic 1984 movie, Splash is being remade with Jillian Bell and Channing Tatum in a gender swapped approach to the characters. Tatum will play the Daryl Hannah role as a merman with Bell playing a variation of the Tom Hanks character.

The film was confirmed to be in the works back in June but the casting news came today to everyone’s surprise.

Splash in 1984 was directed by Ron Howard and was written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel from a story by Brian Grazer and Bruce Jay Friedman. It grossed nearly $70 million at the ’84 box office, and co-starred John Candy and Eugene Levy alongside leads Hannah and Hanks.

The Splash reboot will be written by Marja-Lewis Ryan from a pitch originated by Bell. Howard and Grazer are returning as producers alongside Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Tatum himself. Anna Culp, meanwhile, is set to serve as executive producer.

There is no word on an anticipated production schedule or release date.

Paramount Confirms Star Trek 4 with Chris Hemsworth Returning

startrek-beyond

Star Trek Beyond is premiering later this week and Paramount Pictures have already confirmed that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return for another film, the fourth in the franchise, the currently unnamed Star Trek 4.

Interestingly, they also announced that Chris Hemsworth is returning as the young go-getting father of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk. Kirk will finally get to meet the father he never knew but yet still left an indelible mark on the young leader.

You may remember that Hemsworth already appeared once before in 2009’s Star Trek as the character.

The remaining cast is also expected to return. (Except for Anton Yelchin who tragically died earlier this year. No word on plans for his character, Chekov.)

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

No director or release date have been confirmed for the film. There is no word on when the fourth installment will begin production either.

The series’ third film, Star Trek Beyond, is directed by Justin Lin and opens in theaters on July 22.

Series Creator Dan Harmon Says a Community Movie Will Happen – Eventually

community_0

Dan Harmon, a marvelous yet enigmatic man, has hinted once again that the insanely beloved television show “Community” would return via a movie – thus fulfilling the #6seasonsandamovie destiny.

“Community” ended last year after six seasons, the 6th season premiering on Yahoo. It had a large ensemble cast including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Allison Brie, Ken Jeong, Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover. However, the cast has all moved on from what it appears. Such as Donald Glover, who recently landed his own comedy at FX, Brie is on various projects like “Bojack Horseman,” Gillian Jacobs is in the new Netflix series “Love” while the other actors are in movies and shows all over the place.

Harmon recently commented on Larry King Now,

“If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just from my own mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it,” Harmon told King. “Whereas, on the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say, ‘We’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie!’ well, I guess that’s a bad idea too.”

Harmon added, “‘It’ll make a great movie. It’ll happen.”

See the Concept Images of Disneyland’s Star Wars-Themed Park

SWThemedLand-thumb-633x475-481784

Disneyland has been teasing their upcoming “Star Wars” themed park addition since they bought the franchise and we finally have some concept art!

The Disney Parks Blog debuted the first concept images at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. today. The picture encompasses the entire 14-acre area and is the largest single movie-themed land in all of the Disney resorts.

The images were first spotted on the fence along Big Thunder Trail in Frontierland, which will be the location of one of the park’s entry points. The blog refers to it as a “never-before-seen planet in the Star Wars galaxy.” The blog says the park will contain “markets, landing zones and buildings,” and the parked Millennium Falcon means that visitors will be able to climb aboard and channel their inner Han Solo.

Star Wars land isn’t opening up anytime soon but they do seem to be moving forward.

Cate Blanchett in Talks to Join All-Female Ocean’s Eleven

Cate1

According to reports from The Playlist, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, is in talks to join an upcoming all female Ocean’s Eleven reboot, which Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Pleasantville) will direct and produce. She would join fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock who has already joined the cast. The report says that Blanchett would star as the equivalent of Brad Pitt’s Rusty to Bullock’s ringleader. The reboot is tentatively titled Ocean’s Ocho.

The all female reboot of Ocean’s Eleven is supposed to be a continuation of the George Clooney-led films, with Bullock playing Danny Ocean’s ex-con sister. With help from her right-hand woman (Blanchett), she’ll form a team of thieves to steal a necklace from the Met Ball in order to frame a villainous gallery owner.

Unfortunately Clooney is not expected to make a cameo at the time though there is talk he would appear if there were sequels.

Shooting on the reboot is expected to begin this fall. Right now there is no anticipated release date and no other news of stars attached.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Needs Reshoots

Rogue-One-A-Star-Wars-Story-logo

The upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff film, Rogue One, is stuck doing reshoots in mid-June for four more weeks. Thankfully the reshoots do not delay the release of the film on December 16.

According to the website, Uproxx, reshoots were already scheduled in June for Rogue One. However, the reasoning behind the reshoots for Rogue One has now been clarified. Reportedly, Disney decided the project needed the reshoots after watching the rough cut of the film. They decided it didn’t give off the feeling that other “classic” Star Wars movies had. Per The Hollywood Reporter, one viewer described Rogue One as “having the feel of a war movie.” Deadline is also reporting that the reshoots are being done because producers thought that Rogue One needed more of an edge, closer to what Force Awakens had.

There have also been rumors that the reshoots give Rogue One a chance to add a cameo by young Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich, to the plotline.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens also had three weeks of reshoots during its production.

Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to Star in Mary Poppins Returns

rs_1024x759-160531140132-1024-lin-manuel-miranda-emily-blunt-mary-poppins-053116

My favorite person right now, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is set to star in a Mary Poppins sequel! AHHHHHHHH.

Walt Disney Pictures officially announced that a sequel to the 1964 musical was in the works, titled Mary Poppins Returns then this week they announced that Golden Globe Award winner Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) and Emmy, Grammy, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”) are set to star.

Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. The sequel is pulling from P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels which take place in Depression-era London. It follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

The film will be directed by Oscar nominee, Emmy and DGA Award winner Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt. The screenplay will be written by Oscar nominee David Magee. Oscar nominee and Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and Shaiman and Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman writing original songs.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.

Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on December 25, 2018.
