“Lady Dynamite” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2016. It is based on Maria Bamford’s chaotic life as an actress/comedian throughout multiple periods of her character’s life. It will be a Netflix original exclusive series, produced by Pam Brady, Mitch Hurwitz and Bamford.
In the greatest TV news of the week, Netflix has officially renewed their hit animated original series, “BoJack Horseman” for a third season just weeks after the show hit the streaming service with its second season.
BoJack Horseman is an incredibly irreverent and dark comedy series following a 90’s sitcom star who is attempting to make his way back into the spotlight (and out of his crippling depression and self destructive habits.)
The series features an all star cast providing the voices including Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Allison Brie, Amy Sedaris, and Paul F. Tompkins. Not to mention dozens of guests stars such as Patton Oswalt and John Krasinski.
Paul, who voices Todd Chavez, said,
“So stoked about this and I truly hope all of you are as well. Thanks for the support you beautiful people.”
Netflix announced the renewal earlier this week saying that “BoJack Horseman” would return in 2016. Now lets hope that is January 2016, though more realistically it will sometime around July. They did say that it received a 12 episode order for the next season.
Netflix has officially released a new trailer for its newest Original Series, “Narcos.” The series takes viewers to the south while we follow the US drug enforcement team as they attempt to take down the notorious Colombian drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar.
“Narcos” will specifically follow the true story of Medellin Cartel and their the rampant spread of cocaine around the globe in the ’80s as well as Escobar and a Mexican DEA agent sent on a U.S. mission to capture and kill him.
This upcoming series will be the ninth Original Series for Netflix in the past two and a half years.
We have been eagerly awaiting the return of the Netflix Original Animated series, “Bojack Horseman” for it’s second season. Netflix has officially announced that the next season will premiere on July 17.
The second season will feature 12 episodes with all 12 premiering on the streaming service at once. Will Arnett will return as BoJack, along with co-stars Aaron Paul as Todd Chavez and Alison Brie as Diane Nguyen. Amy Sedaris and Paul F. Tompkins will also return to reprise their roles. However, Netflix has said fans can expect several surprise guest stars in the new season.
Not much is known regarding the plot of the second season but more details are expected to be released shortly.
Not surprisingly, Netflix has renewed “Orange is the New Black” for a fourth season. Interestingly, the streaming service has renewed the series before the third season has premiered. Season three will premiere all of the episodes for streaming on June 12 while season four will arrive sometime in 2016.
Season 3 will feature some new faces and the return of some favorites. Mary Steenburgen joined the cast and was revealed to be playing the mother of Pablo Schreiber’s character (Mendez aka Pornstache). Laura Prepon will return as Alex. She wasn’t seen as much in season two, since the character was released from prison for a while, but she will be back full time in season three. Mike Birbiglia has joined the cast in an unknown role. Ruby Rose joined the cast as a new inmate who will play a potential love interest for both Piper and Alex.
OITNB has won three Emmys, two SAG awards, an NAACP Image award, a Peabody and a PGA award, along with incredible critical acclaim and fan love.
Netflix knows what it is doing and knows what shows fans want. Along with the return of OITNB, they also renewed “House of Cards” for a fourth season.
A new clip for the upcoming season three has been released which you can watch below:
Since the recent rule change for the Primetime Emmy Awards, several shows have been up in arms about their new category. The new rule states that any show over 30 minutes in length would compete in the drama category at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. This was not the best of news for shows like “Orange is the New Black” who have been considered comedies.
It was then stated that shows that were longer than 30 minutes could argue to be put back in the comedy category with a petition which is just what some did like “Shameless,” “Glee” and “Jane the Virgin.” Apparently, “Orange is the New Black” attempted to do this as well but since they only competed in the Emmy’s once so far, the committee has turned down their petition and ruled that OITNB will have to compete in the drama category.
This means the series will be competing against shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Men” and fellow Netflix sibling “House of Cards.”
The ruling by the committee is surprising considering at last year’s awards, OINTB received an impressive 12 nominations in the comedy category. It was an even bigger upset when the top prize was given to the fifth season of “Modern Family” instead. Many believed this year would be the year that OINTB would come back to win it all but if the show is not allowed to compete in the comedy category, the chances of it winning anything are even smaller (considering its competition.)
“Orange Is the New Black is a truly pioneering series and an iconoclast which has always defied genre or easy categorization. While we’re disappointed in the committee’s decision, we believe that Orange represents the best of television in either category.”
The biggest piece of news to come out of last week in terms of entertainment was that Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action television series based on the iconic game series, “The Legend of Zelda.” According to The Wall Street Journal, who first reported the news, the series is being described as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience.
WSJ report that the streaming service has begun the search for a writer for the project however the series has to tread carefully given Nintendo’s strict protection of adaptations of their properties.
The television series would have much source material to draw from. Since the first game released in 1986, “The Legend of Zelda” franchise has released over twenty games while remaining one of the most beloved game series in the world.
Fans remain scared, excited, and weary as an animated series based on the game was famously produced in 1989 and was famously not great.
With Netflix involved, it adds more clout to the adaptation. Netflix has done well recently giving us quality original programming such as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.”
More details regarding the project will be released over the next few months but the live action adaptation is still in the very early stages of development.
“House of Cards” is finally returning to Netflix! The third season premiere date has been officially announced with the show returning to the instant streaming service on February 27.
Set in present-day Washington, D.C., House of Cards is the story of Frank Underwood, portrayed by Kevin Spacey, a Democrat from South Carolina’s 5th congressional district and House majority whip who, after being passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, initiates an elaborate plan to get himself into a position of power. His loyal wife, Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright, assists him in this endeavor. The series is primarily about ruthless pragmatism, manipulation, power, and doing bad things for the greater good.
As with previous seasons, all episodes of season three will be available to steam beginning of the 27th. You can see the announcement below:
When season 4 of “Arrested Development” aired on Netflix, there were a few incredibly dedicated fans who took the time to reedit the season themselves in chronological order. However, most of those edits were taken off the internet almost immediately. Now, series creator, Mitch Hurwitz, is re-editing the nonlinear season himself.
So, while we wait for season five, we can we watch the tale of Cinco de Cuatro from start to finish. During an interview with Pretentious Film Majors, Hurwitz said,
“Right now, I’m cutting a version of Season 4 that tells it chronologically.”
Each episode of season 4 was focused on one characters point of view during the same few months of events. There is no word how the new chronological system would be presented.
Hurwitz also confirmed that an Arrested Development movie is still in the plans but with no immediate information on when we can expect it. He said,
“Season 4 was always meant to be act one of the three-act structure where everything goes sour.”
Judd Apatow is heading to television land again. Netflix announced today that the company picked up the producer’s series, “Love,” for two seasons to air on their streaming service for 22 episodes.
“Love” is a relationship comedy starring Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs. It follows Gus (Rust) and Mickey (Jacobs) as they “navigate the exhilaration and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid,” according to Deadline.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, said,
“Judd Apatow has a unique comedic voice that manages to be delightful, insightful, and shockingly frank — often at the same time. Together with Paul and Lesley, he’s bringing a whole new level of agony and ecstasy to this modern day comedy of manners.”
Apatow has not has luck previously with his television shows but that doesn’t mean his shows weren’t good. They have had a fierce but loving cult following. Many saying now that they were cancelled far too soon, (And we agree.) But this two-season order obviously means that Netflix feels confident in Apatows newest project.
Unfortunately “Love” will not premiere until 2016.
