Netflix and the CBS Corporation have officially announced today that all eight seasons of the Showtime series, “Dexter” will be hitting Netflix Instant. Beginning on Halloween (Oct 31, 2013), the first four seasons of the award-winning series will be available to watch instantly; seasons 5-8 will begin on Jan 1, 2014.
“Dexter” stars Golden Globe winning actor Michael C. Hall as the titular Dexter Morgan, a serial killer. As a Miami forensics expert, he spends his days solving crimes, and nights committing them. But Dexter lives by a strict code of honor that is both his saving grace and lifelong burden. Torn between his deadly compulsion and his desire for true happiness, Dexter is a man in profound conflict with the world and himself.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, said,
“We’re thrilled to have ‘Dexter,’ one of Showtime’s highest-rated shows on Netflix, and so quickly after it completed its record-breaking run. This is one of the great serialized dramas of the past decade and we know our members will enjoy discovering or reliving the twisted world of Dexter Morgan anywhere and anytime they want.”
Scott Koondel, Chief Corporate Content Licensing Officer, CBS Corporation, added,
“We’re excited to expand our relationship with Netflix’s premium service with this groundbreaking Showtime series. Showtime has created one of the signature programming brands on television, and this agreement for ‘Dexter’ further demonstrates the value of this content in the marketplace while expanding the show’s passionate fan base to a whole new online audience.”
“Dexter” aired on Showtime from October 1, 2006 to September 22, 2013. The series has enjoyed wide critical acclaim and popularity, including four straight Primetime Emmy nominations for Best Drama series in its first four seasons. Season four aired its season finale on December 13, 2009 to a record-breaking audience of 2.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched original series episode ever on Showtime at that time.
In April 2013, Showtime announced that season eight would be the final season of “Dexter.” The season eight premiere was the most watched Dexter episode ever with over 3 million viewers. The original broadcast of the series finale—shown at 9 p.m. on September 22, 2013—drew 2.8 million viewers, the largest overall audience in Showtime’s history.
