Activision Says “Call of Duty: Ghosts” is the Most Played Next-Gen Title

Activision has officially announced that “Call of Duty: Ghosts” is the most played game on the next-gen consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4. They also announced that it is the top selling Xbox One and PlayStation 4 title at leading North American retailers.

According to the press release:

The next generation of game consoles is here, and Call of Duty®: Ghosts is the must have game. Activision’s blockbuster title is the #1 most played Xbox One multiplayer game worldwide, according to Microsoft, while becoming the #1 top-selling Xbox One title in retail sales in North America at retailers Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Wal-Mart. In standalone Xbox One software retail sales*, the game also is #1 in the United Kingdom, according to GfK Charttrack. Additionally, Call of Duty: Ghosts is the #1 most played PlayStation® 4 game, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America, and continues to be the #1 top-selling PS4 title in retail sales in North America at Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Wal-Mart.

So far more than 1 billion multiplayer matches of Call of Duty: Ghosts already have been played across all versions. Ghosts’ players have Prestiged more than 2.2 million times, earning over 3.3 trillion Experience Points (XP), according to internal gameplay statistics.

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc, said,

“Around the globe, Call of Duty: Ghosts is leading the next generation. It’s the #1 selling title at key retailers and it’s also the most played game on Xbox One and PS4 globally. As we’ve said before, we’ve got the best community of fans in the world, and we’re thrilled they’re coming with us to the next generation.”

“Call of Duty: Ghosts” is also the 1 most played Xbox 360 multiplayer game, according to Microsoft.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Announced

A brand-new “Lord of the Rings” inspired video game is on the way. “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor,” is a next-gen, third-person action game that promises an “original, dark story of retribution”.

The game is in development for both current generation and next generation consoles including PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 at Monolith. Gamers will play as a ranger whose family was slain by Sauron’s armies. Having been killed himself, he’s resurrected with “Wraith abilities”, and is ready to take on the Mordor hordes. The story involves the Rings of Power but otherwise seems totally separate from Lord of the Rings canon, though Warner promises it will align.

Warner’s Samantha Ryan said,

“Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death… The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”

What makes this game unique is the enemy system. “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” differentiates every enemy in the game according to personality, strengths and weaknesses.

“Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session,” claims Warner’s press release. “Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player.”

There’s no release window yet, but IGN predicts a 2015 release.

Activision Sells More Than $1 Billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts Into Retail

Yesterday, it seemed like 90% of Xbox or PS3 gamers were playing “Call of Duty: Ghosts” which released yesterday. Including my boyfriend unsurprisingly. But it seems that the game has already done extremely well financially for Activision.

Activision has announced that it has sold more than $1 billion of “Ghosts” into retail. According to a press release from Activision, “Call of Duty: Ghosts” has moved to the #1 spot as the most played game on Xbox Live, according to Microsoft. Additionally, Activision confirmed that on the Xbox 360 video games and entertainment system from Microsoft, average player sessions for Ghosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3, during the same time period.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, said,

“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation. More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty®: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, also added,

“Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet. This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next-gen title.”
