Prince Has Passed Away at the Age of 57

Music just keeps dying all around us. The legendary singer Prince has passed away today at the age of 57. He died at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota.

The details are very few right now as police are not releasing any details. But what we do know is that Minnesota police responded to an emergency at the estate at about 9:30 am. The released news that there was a dead body but did not confirm that it was Prince. TMZ was the first to report on the singer’s death.

The AP has since confirmed Prince’s passing. A statement from Prince’s reps can be read below.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57. There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.”

Prince was hospitalized last week after his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois following a show in Atlanta. At that time, his team said he had been battling the flu and was dehydrated.

Unfortunately as of now, there’s no word on the cause of death, though Prince had to cancel multiple shows recently due to health concerns. According to Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson, when the police arrived at Prince’s estate this morning, they found him unresponsive in an elevator and attempted to perform CPR.

This is a huge loss to the world of music. He has impacted music and culture in a way that no one else ever can again. His singles hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart five times. During his career, Prince released 37 studio albums, with the last being HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two, which were released in 2015.

Sturgill Simpson Announces New Album

Sturgill Simpson, the bluegrass country artist who burst into the scene in 2014, has announced a brand new album with one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen.

The sophomore effort is called A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. The new album will be released on April 15. Simpson has released the first song from the album as well;  “Brace for Impact (Live a Little),” which you can listen to at the bottom of this post.

Simpson released this press release in regards to album, what it means, and how it came to be:

I really questioned whether I wanted to spend however many more years on this bus, not being there and seeing all that was happening. That’s where this record came from, just processing all that guilt and homesickness. I had to figure out a way to put that into music, so I decided to write the whole record from the perspective of a sailor going to sea and not knowing if he’s ever coming home.I remembered an old letter that I read, written by my Grandfather Ora to my grandmother when he was in the Army. He was in the South Pacific during World War II, and he thought he was going to die. So he wrote a goodbye letter to her and their newborn son. He finally made it home five years later…

I knew I wanted to make a concept record in song-cycle form, like my favorite Marvin Gaye records where everything just continuously flows. I also wanted it to be something that when my son is older and maybe I’m gone, he can listen to it and get a sense of who I was. I just wanted to talk as directly to him as possible.

A Sailor’s Guide to Earth will also include a cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” and he also discussed that choice in the press release:

I remember in seventh or eighth grade, when that album dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom. For me, that song has always summed up what it means to be a teenager, and I think it tells a young boy that he can be sensitive and compassionate—he doesn’t have to be tough or cold to be a man. So I wanted to make a very beautiful and pure homage to Kurt.

Track List:

1. Welcome to Earth (Pollywog)
2. Breakers Roar
3. Keep It Between the Lines
4. Sea Stories
5. In Bloom
6. Brace for Impact (Live a Little)
7. All Around You
8. Oh Sarah
9. Call to Arms

Grizfolk has announced their plans to release their highly anticipated full-length debut album, Waking Up The Giants [Virgin Records], on Friday January 8 through iTunes alongside their upcoming tour!

The digital pre-order is now live, and allows fans an instant grat download of the single “Troublemaker” as well as the four tracks off the previously released EP From The Spark. Additionally, the band has launched a pre-order through their online store for an exclusive vinyl bundle of the debut album, signed by the band, which is available here:

With the release of the album, Grizfolk is going on tour beginning early 2016. The tour starts off Thursday January 21 at Voodoo Room in San Diego, CA.

“When we all met in a studio in Santa Monica in 2013, little did we know that we would be writing our debut full length album Waking Up the Giants,” said Grizfolk. ”Looking back and listening to the album now that it’s completed, it truly is a journal of memories and emotions that we’ve gathered these past 2 years. We can only hope that you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Their popular single, “Troublemaker,” continues to steadily rise at Alternative Radio and the band is partnering with Vevo to premiere its music video later this month. “Troublemaker” is also included in Activision’s Guitar Hero Live.

Critics are also enthusiastically responding to Grizfolk. Recently, Paste Magazine described “Troublemaker” as “a raunchy mix of electronic synth and guitar,” and Spin named them one of “Five Can’t Miss Emerging Artists at Voodoo Fest,” adding, “For those who love unapologetic, badass alt-rock staples but want something more, we give you Grizfolk.”

Grizfolk made their television debut earlier this year on the Late Show with David Letterman. They’ve got a bevy of festivals under their belts including Firefly Music FestivalHangout FestivalFree Press Summer FestivalBoston Calling Music FestivalVoodoo Music + Experience, and more. The Gills: Listen to Live or Online – Just Listen to Them

Photo courtesy of The Gills Facebook Page

Nashville is a city flush with musical talent and one of those local bands happens to be The Gills.

Originally the band may be from Pensacola, Florida but they have made Nashville their home over the last several years and our city has welcomed them.

A lot of bands feel their music but not every band can make the audience feel it too but The Gills accomplish that within the first song. Two songs in and the crowd is dancing, moving, and reacting to every lyric and every chorus. The Gills are extremely talented as evident from the moment they began their first set.

The quartet switch effortlessly from one song to the next, packing in the most musical enjoyment as possible into the time allotted.

Their sound is very unique and immediately grabs your attention. They stuck out from the other band proceeding them and surpassed other bands I’ve heard dozens of times before. The music is full of energy, full of drive. You can’t help but feel it in every bone. The lead singer pulls all the parts together with his dynamic voice but he isn’t the only heart. Every player provides depth that the band would be missing otherwise.

The Gills are a rare live show that sounds just as good as their recorded pieces. A group that you could see again and again without it ever being boring or have it feel like a repeat. Whether you listen to them live or listen to them online – just listen to them.

The Gills are currently working their self-titled album which is scheduled to be released in 2016.
