Independence Day 2 is unfortunately moving to 2016. Make your sad faces now. The film from Roland Emmerich was set to hit theaters on July 3, 2015, however, now the science fiction sequel will not be hitting our faces till July 1, 2016.
The push back is not surprising as so many components of the film are left unknown at the moment. Will Smith, the star of the original film, has still not decided whether or not he will reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller for the sequel, although Emmerich recently stated that scripts have been written both with and without the character in them. That means that no plot has been definitively decided upon nor whether or not any of the other actors will return for the sequel as well.
Emmerich confirmed that a number of the original film’s characters appear in the script(s) by Dean Devlin and himself but he hasn’t stated who that includes. The 1996 original also starred Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, Brent Spiner, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox.
PLEASE let Goldblum return.
