The Future Is Here: There’s Going To Be a Reversible USB Plug

By on December 4, 2013

We have all done the official Dance of the USB Plug. The back and forth switching of cables till the sweet spot is found. Finally the world of technology has caught up with the desires of the masses with a USB plug that is reversible.

Can we all say Hallelujah!?

In the official press release from the USB 3.0 Promoter Group (which is apparently a thing that people actually do for a living) just announced a new Type-C connector. The plug is designed to “enable an entirely new super-thin class of devices from phones to tablets, to 2-in-1s, to laptops to desktops,” while the new connector will be around the size of a Micro USB plug. Though more importantly, it will be reversible.

Currently, it is not known what the data and power handling capabilities of the new Type-C connector will be, but it will likely be similar to the forthcoming 10Gbps 3.1 cable. The USB 3.0 Promoter Group expects that specifications for the reversible plug will be finalized by the middle of 2014.
