We finally have a director for the reboot of The Mummy in Alex Kurtzman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is in the final negotiations with Universal Pictures to helm the project that he is already producing with Chris Morgan.

THR says the “is set in the present and is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements. It will also feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations.”

The script has been a collaborative effort from Kurtzman and his former partner Roberto Orci. Currently, Jon Spaihts is working on it. Sean Daniel is serving as producer and Bobby Cohen as executive producer.

The co-president of production, Jeff Kirschenbaum, said,

“Over the course of developing ‘The Mummy,’ Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology. He knows why ‘The Mummy’ has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well.”

The Mummy is planned to be the beginning of a series with this first film releasing on April 22, 2016.
