Justin Lin Takes Over Star Trek 3

Fast and Furious 6

A few weeks ago, director Roberto Orci left the production of Star Trek 3 and it was left uncertain who would take over the massive and highly anticipated film. This week it was announced that Justin Lin has signed on to direct the third installment in the new franchise.

Lin is most known for his work on The Fast and the Furious series. Within the franchise, he directed four installments: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo DriftFast & Furious,Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6. Despite being obviously proficient with large action sequence, many fans are dismayed at the science fiction franchise being taken over by the “Fast and Furious” director. However, Lin will also be directing episodes of HBO’s upcoming True Detective Season 2 which is promising.

Why Orci stepped down is not known but it came just a few weeks after he broke up with his longtime producing and writing partner Alex Kurtzman. Star Trek 3 was to be the directorial debut for Orci. It is possible and rumored that he left production having been overwhelmed and bitten off more than he could chew. After all he was taking over for former director J.J. Abrams who left to director Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Currently, Orci has stayed silent in regards to his motives for leaving.

There is no premiere date announced yet.
