If you thought you only had two books left to finish the greatest saga of all time, A Song of Ice and Fire, well, I have a mixed bag of news.
Series author, George R.R. Martin’s book editor has revealed that there maybe an EIGHTH book in the series.
Anne Groell recently participated in a live Q&A on the Suvudu Universe website about the HBO series based on the book as well as the written franchise from Martin.
When a fan asked,
“Do you think it will take GRRM more than seven books to finish ASOIAF?”
Groell replied enigmatically,
“I begin to wonder—though 7 is what we currently have under contract. I remember when he called me, years and years back, to confess that his little trilogy was…well…no longer a trilogy. He predicted four books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he said five books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he went to six. I said… Well, you get it. Finally, we were on the same page. Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Good. Only, as I recently learned while editing The World of Ice and Fire (another awesome thing you must buy when it comes out!), there are really technically eight kingdoms, all having to do with who has annexed what when Aegon the Conqueror landed in Westeros. So, maybe eight books for Seven Kingdoms would be okay.”
Does this mean Martin is planning on a new book or that his editor is merely pushing for a final eighth book? We don’t know., but Groell promised that Martin is “hard at work” on the 6th book that we are anxiously awaiting.
Jane Johnson, Martin’s publisher in the U.K., told The Guardian,
“Only George knows how many books there will be in the series and he’s not saying…It feels as if there’s a lot to tie up in just two more novels—albeit very long novels—but if George continues to kill off characters in his usual ruthless fashion it could easily be over in the planned seven books!”
The World of Ice and Fire, which is set to be released on October 28, is a companion book to the series outlining the geography and history of Westeros.
