GRRM Has a New Twist for Winds of Winter that Won’t Be in the TV Show

Now that the HBO series, “Game of Thrones” has caught up and basically surpassed the novel series A Song of Ice and Fire of which it is based, some readers may be less enticed to read the forthcoming novel. (I mean let’s be real, this may not have happened had author George R.R. Martin not taken 5 plus years to write the upcoming novel “The Winds of Winter” which we still have no idea when it is coming out.)

However, GRRM has announced that he will be putting a “twist” in the upcoming final two novels that is a diversion from the series on HBO. He claims this diversion is because certain life-and-death plot changes in the show have already begun.

“It involves a couple of characters, one of whom is dead on the show but not dead in the books,” Martin said, in the course of the 25-minute interview with IGN. “The show can’t do this stuff, because they killed a character that I have not killed.”

It is hard to figure out who exactly may get the axe considering there are at least 15 characters who fit the description but as with most things there is a Reddit thread where this is being widely discussed.

Hopefully, “The Winds of Winter” will release next year as soon as the creative muse inhabits GRRM once more.

GRRM Hasn’t Figured Out the Exact Ending for ASOIAF

“Game of Thrones” and A Song of Ice and Fire author, George R.R. Martin, revealed recently that he has not yet decided how to end the popular series.  But don’t worry fans, he has an overall tone set for the final book in the series and with those ideas in mind, the HBO show will follow accordingly.

“I haven’t written the ending yet,” Martin said in an interview with the Observer when asked if the ending would be particularly dark. “I’ve said before that the tone of the ending that I’m going for is bittersweet,” he added.

GRRM said that the Lord of the Rings series provided some inspiration for A Song of Ice and Fire.

“It ends with victory, but it’s a bittersweet victory. Frodo is never whole again, and he goes away to the Undying Lands, and the other people live their lives,” he said. Martin says that’s exactly the sort of tone he’ll be aiming for with the Song of Ice and Fire ending.

When it comes to the HBO show, the producers have said many times that they know what to do if something happens and the book series is never completed. David Benioff, one of the main writers and producers, explained that they have had MANY conversations with GRRM about the show and the direction in which the books are heading. Benioff also explained that GRRM “makes a lot of stuff up as he’s writing it. Even while we talk to him about the ending, it doesn’t mean that that ending that he has currently conceived is going to be the ending when he eventually writes it.”

The sixth season of the HBO series is currently filming in Northern Ireland.

Game of Thrones is Getting a Coloring Book

The insanely popular George R.R. Martin book series, “A Song of Ice and Fire” turned even more insanely popular HBO series, “Game of Thrones” is getting a coloring book that will likely obliterate your red crayons and markers.

Bantam Books, a subsidiary of US publisher Penguin Random House, has announced that it will publish a Game of Thrones-themed coloring book based the series and fans are seriously excited. The book is being called an “adult coloring book” and Bantam reports it “will feature 45 original black and white illustrations, inspired by characters, scenes, locations and other iconic images from Martin’s wildly successful ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series.”

According to Penguin Random House’s website, George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones Coloring Book will release on October 27, 2015.

Original Plot for Game of Thrones Revealed

A three page letter has surfaced from George R.R. Martin to his publisher in 1993 revealing the original plot of “Game of Thrones” and what the author planned for it’s possible future.

The book retailer, Waterstones, took pictures of the letter though it has since been deleted. But this is the internet and nothing is ever really deleted so with some good detective work you can probably still find the pictures of the letter.

Regardless, it seems that while much of the original plot has been deviated from there are major bits that are (currently) still intact including five major characters that Martin had originally intended to survive the books since the very beginning.

:::: Spoilers for the book and show below ::::

Originally, according to the letter, Martin intended the A Song of Ice and Fire series to be a trilogy however as we all know that has not been the case for a long, long, time. Martin, had always intended to have Ned Stark die in the brutal way we see: discovering the truth about Jon Arryn’s murder and then being sentenced to death by Joffrey. There is one small difference in that Martin had meant to have Ned send Arya and Catelyn Stark out of King’s Landing before he was sentenced to death.

Here is where things start to get REALLY different from where we are today.

Martin had planned to have Robb fight Joffrey on the battlefield with the young king being maimed in the process. One of the biggest differences between what we have and what could have been is that Sansa would have arried Joffrey and born him a son and heir. Eventually, she would have had to make a choice between her Stark family and her husband and would end up coming down on the side of the Lannisters, before coming to bitterly regret this later.

Tyrion would have also been able to dethrone Joffrey finally with the death blow of Tywin being delivered by Jaime instead. Jaime would have then claimed the throne himself before blaming all his crimes on Tyrion who is  exiled and decides to ally himself with the Starks.

Arya and Jon Snow fall in love with each other up at the wall where Catelyn and her fled. They refuse to act on it because of the whole incest thing along with his Night’s Watch vow of celibacy. HOWEVER!! Martin says that this changes because of Jon’s parentage is revealed. Is this another hint to prove a very popular theory about Jon Snow’s parentage? Tyron also falls in love with Ayra adding a love triangle where Jon and Tyrion also loathe each other. Though, Ayra does not feel the same way for Tyrion.

The Starks are forced out of the Wall and they end up meeting Mance Rayder where Cat meets her death at the hands of one of the Others (also known as The White Walkers from the TV show.)

Don’t worry, Dany is still in Martin’s original draft. She invades Westerns sooner but only after killing Khal Drogo out of revenger for the death of her brother Viserys.

The final paragraph of the letter was blacked out so the ending is still a mystery but Martin did identify that the five character to survive where Dany, Arya, Jon, Bran, and, Tyrion.

There is no indication whether any of this will happen in the real series or if these five character will survive the book series now, but we can hope.

Game of Thrones: The Winds of Winter Will Not Release in 2015

In sad book news that you always knew in your heart but never fully admit to yourself, the next novel in A Song of Ice and Fire WILL NOT release in 2015. The publisher, HarperCollins confirmed that “The Winds of Winter” by George R.R. Martin is not on the upcoming slate.

However, to soothe frothing fans, HarperCollins is publishing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the illustrated collection of the official prequel novellas “The Hedge Knight,” “The Sworn Sword” and “The Mystery Knight.” The collection is releasing in October.

“I have no information on likely delivery,” HarperCollins’ Jane Johnson told The Guardian. “These are increasingly complex books and require immense amounts of concentration to write. Fans really ought to appreciate that the length of these monsters is equivalent to two or three novels by other writers.”

GRRM Offended By Those Who Think He Won’t Finish Series

george rr martin

A Song of Ice and Fire author, George R.R. Martin is not amused by those mere mortals who have such little faith in his writing prowess. yes, it’s true he isn’t Stephen King when it comes to pumping out novels but HE IS GOING TO FINISH THE SERIES PEOPLE!

The 65 year old writer has spent decades writing the famous series and fans are patiently awaiting the release of the last two novels in the series. But the author’s health is constant speculation that has led to assumptions that GRRM may die before the seventh book is complete.

GRRM, however, has two words for people who think he won’t live long enough to finish the last book: “Fuck you.”

He said in an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger,

“I find that question pretty offensive, people speculating about my death and my health. So fuck you to those people.”

But fans of the series are quick to point out that they have experienced this exact scenario before (the late Robert Jordan devastated fans and left a series incomplete.)

But Martin is quick to remind you he is not your writing bitch so calm down everyone.

The ASOIAF Series is Getting to a Deadly Point for Characters

george rr martin

During a press event in London last week, A Song of Ice and Fire author, George R.R. Martin, revealed that he is ready to do some hacking and slashing to some of your favorite characters – probably.

GRRM was asked if there were any characters currently still alive that couldn’t be killed because they were essential to the plot. He cryptically said,

I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill. Sometimes there’s only one character who’s my eye in a particular location, and if I kill that character everything going on in that particular subplot is going to be lost. The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that. And now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in. The viewpoint characters are meeting up with each other and being in the same point at the same time. … Which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.

Without giving anything away, it seems like GRRM is telling us that everything he has been building over several books is coming to head. What this means for the characters that have survived this long, we don’t know and it doesn’t look like he is giving any hints.

However, a few weeks ago he did admit some fans have already figured out how the series will end so maybe you already know?

Our advice? Stop getting emotionally attached. It will likely only end in heartbreak while George R.R. Martin grows stronger with every tear you shed.

The ASOIAF series has two books remaining (supposedly) with no release date yet announced for the next installment, “The Winds of Winter.

George R.R. Martin Says Some Fans Know How the Series Ends

According to George R.R. Martin, you might have already guessed how A Song of Ice and Fire will end. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, the notoriously enigmatic author revealed that while he knows how the series will end, some fans have already figured it out as well.

He said that throughout the series he has hidden clues that are “extremely subtle and obscure,” and that only a couple of readers have found “the right solution.”

GRRM said,

“So many readers were reading the books with so much attention that they were throwing up some theories and while some of those theories were amusing bullshit and creative, some of the theories are right.”

Martin isn’t going to reveal what those clues are of course. We still have two more books to get through before all is revealed. Plus, he explained he wants to keep a surprise for those readers who don’t scour the internet trying to figure out how it will all end.

“Some of my readers who don’t read the boards, which thankfully there are hundreds of thousands of them, will still be surprised and other readers will say: ‘see, I said that four years ago, I’m smarter than you guys,'” he said.

So that theory you have been harboring since book one might be correct. But you’ll have to wait two more books to find out.

George R.R. Martin Talks New ASOIAF Novel

While we sit patiently awaiting (kind of) for George R.R. Martin to publish the sixth novel, the author has at least given us some details about the upcoming release. I’m pretty sure it is just to appease us peasants though.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for people who only watch the HBO series or those who have not read all of the currently release books.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, GRRM spoke about the futures of Tyrion and Daenerys in the upcoming book “Winds of Winter.”

Well, Tyrion and Dany will intersect, in a way, but for much of the book they’re still apart. They both have quite large roles to play here. Tyrion has decided that he actually would like to live, for one thing, which he wasn’t entirely sure of during the last book, and he’s now working toward that end—if he can survive the battle that’s breaking out all around him. And Dany has embraced her heritage as a Targaryen and embraced the Targaryen words. So they’re both coming home.

In case you were wondering, GRRM confirmed there would be more “deaths, and we have more betrayals. We have more marriages.”

George R.R. Martin Explains His Publishing Plan

After George R.R. Martin’s publisher Anne Groell revealed that an eighth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” may be in the future, GRRM spoke to EW about what his actual plan for the series entails.

Martin confirms that he currently plans to finish the series in seven books, but that it was not always the case.

“My plan is to finish in seven,” Martin said. “But my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six. Get back to me when I’m half-way through Book Seven and then maybe I’ll tell you something more meaningful.”

Based on the comment, it seems that the series will continue to go on as plan with seven books.

Martin went on to talk about the current season of the HBO series, more importantly about the changes from the book to the show.

“It’s been a great season,” he said. “Though by and large we are seeing more differences from the books and I’ve been predicting that from the beginning. There’s a certain snowball effect of making changes and I think that will continue. I like many of the new scenes they’ve inserted along the way, though I miss the things they leave out. Obviously I put those scenes in the books for a reason, I felt they added to the story. As I’ve been saying for years, I wish they had more hours — every time I see another HBO show I wonder why we only have 10 and they have 13.”

Martin went on to say,

“But we’ve done some major stuff this year. The Purple Wedding and Tyrion’s trial — with incredible performances by Peter Dinklage and Sibel Kekilli. And the trial by combat was amazing, too.”

Currently, there is no word on when the 6th book will be released. Martin says he is still working on it and given it took 5 years to finish the last book, it might not be anytime soon.
