Season 5 of “Arrested Development” Is Almost Ready

The Bluth family is coming back… again! Netflix is bringing it “Arrested Development” again for a fifth season according to longtime producer Mitch Hurwitz.

Hurwitz recently revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour, “We’re very close.” However, he stressed that nothing is yet official. “It’s the thing I’m really desperate to do. We’ve got a lot of stories broken. We’re ready to go. I’m so appreciative of the fans wanting more, I’d hate to tease them with information until we know it’s going to happen … if it does happen, it looks like shooting would happen at the start of 2017.”

Netflix revived “Arrested Development” for a 15-episode fourth season back in 2013, after the series had been canceled by Fox in 2006 angering fans. When Netflix didn’t immediately renew the show for another season after the fourth in 2013, it worried fans that it would be a one off. But this news from Hurwitz is promising.

Arrested development

Great news, everybody!

According to Brian Grazer, the producer of “Arrested Development,” our Bluths are returning in 2016! in a podcast appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, he confirmed that season 5 the series would be returning in 2016.

“Netflix is determined to do more episodes, so we’re going to do more episodes,” he said, and the angels wept with joy.

New episodes will start filming in January with the season premiere in the summer. Grazer didn’t give any word on how man we can expect. Grazer had previously said that Netflix had promised the show a fifth season but now it is definitely more sure that it is happening.

Season 4 of Arrested Development Being Re-Edited

Arrested development

When season 4 of “Arrested Development” aired on Netflix, there were a few incredibly dedicated fans who took the time to reedit the season themselves in chronological order. However, most of those edits were taken off the internet almost immediately. Now, series creator, Mitch Hurwitz, is re-editing the nonlinear season himself.

So, while we wait for season five, we can we watch the tale of Cinco de Cuatro from start to finish. During an interview with Pretentious Film Majors, Hurwitz said,

“Right now, I’m cutting a version of Season 4 that tells it chronologically.”

Each episode of season 4 was focused on one characters point of view during the same few months of events. There is no word how the new chronological system would be presented.

Hurwitz also confirmed that an Arrested Development movie is still in the plans but with no immediate information on when we can expect it. He said,

“Season 4 was always meant to be act one of the three-act structure where everything goes sour.”

Arrested Development Season 4 DVD Cover Contest Announced

If you are dying to add season 4 of “Arrested Development” to your DVD collection of previous AD seasons, you are in luck. Despite premiering their fourth season on Netflix, the popular cult series is getting a DVD release and fans are getting the chance to design the cover.

Mitch Hurwitz, the show’s creator, recently announced a contest for fans to design the season 4 DVD cover. Apparently, he originally wanted to “steal” the existing fan art (of which there are thousands of amazing pieces out there) to create the box art. However, that idea didn’t sit well with the execs so his new plan to hold a contest.

Fans and artists have until midnight on September 17 to submit their design through Tumblr. The submissions will be judged by a panel between September 20-30. A grand prize winner will be determined sometime in October and announced around November 1st.

Go to Arrestedfanart.com to enter the contest, follow the entry instructions and submit your best work — only one submission per person allowed, even if you have multiple Tumblr accounts or email addresses. For the official rules and submission requirements, click here.

Season 5 of Arrested Development is Happening

If you were worried that it seemed like season 4 of “Arrested Development” was the last one we might get, Netflix says that is not true. It is just a matter of time. Chief Content Officer of Netflix Ted Sarandos assured fans that there would be a fifth season in an article published yesterday.

Part of the problem, he noted, was the incredibly busy schedules of all the cast members. (Yeah, thanks a lot for being popular and successful actors, guys.) “It’s just a matter of when,” said Sarandos.

Then, Will Arnett confirmed season five was on the way when he appeared on “The Tonight Show” this week. He said,

“It’s gonna happen,” said Arnett. “We don’t know when, but it is gonna happen.”

Arrested Development Didn’t “Satisfy” Tony Hale

We all know and love Tony Hale for his role on the cult show “Arrested Development” as Baby Buster Bluth. Apparently, he was disappointed by the role initially.

Hale said in a recent interview,

“When I booked Arrested Development, I remember feeling disappointed. There was so much expectation because it’s all I ever wanted. Then when I got it, it didn’t satisfy me the way I [expected it to],” Hale says.

He clarified that his disappointment wasn’t because AD wasn’t a good job, but mostly because sometimes he found it difficult to remain in the moment.

He added,

“My friend said, ‘You have to wake yourself up 100 times a day to where you are.’ I’m sounding like Oprah, but if you’re not practicing contentment where you are now, you’re not getting contentment when you get what you want.”

Mitch Hurwitz Talks Arrested Development Season 4 Faults and Plans For Season 5/Movie

Mitch Hurwitz is no stranger to the criticisms about season four of “Arrested Development.” As soon as the revived season aired on Netflix, fans and critics were divided about whether it was a great return or the disjointed format did the show a disservice and both sides were equally vocal about their opinions.

During an interview Monday with New York TV Festival, Hurwitz spoke about the problems in bringing back a cult classic series.

“What I came to realize is that some perfect version of ‘Arrested Development’ as it exists for me and the actors and the audience and everybody together probably doesn’t exist,” he said.

Season 4, which premiered after almost a decade hiatus, featured one story, spread out over the entire season, with each episode focusing on one character which resulted in intertwining shorelines that caused the cast to be separate for most episodes. And for all the problems this caused, Hurwitz apologizes.

“I felt in many ways, I did not prepare the audience for this,” he said. “Right before the show came out, I thought, I’ve really not said what this is, and what it had become was a novel. I had this unique opportunity here — people are going to get to watch eight hours of this, they’re not gonna spend the next six months of having it doled out to them … so the storytelling changed. That first episode became much more like chapter one of a novel than episode one of a series. And I didn’t prep you guys — I’m really sorry about that.”

Michael Cera, who plays George-Michael Bluth, said in an interview that the he expected the backlash to the newly formatted series.

“I wasn’t really surprised because I didn’t really have any expectations of how people were going to react to it. I think it’s a strange thing, bringing something back that already has a fanbase built-in. It’s a specific kind of challenge … But I personally really liked it.”

Since the fourth season hit Netflix, rumors of another season AND a movie have returned. Netflix has agreed to have more episodes and many of the ensemble cast members have expressed interest in continuing the series.

“All I’ve been able to say is, I really want to continue with this, and the cast really wants to continue with this,” Hurwtiz said. “What my new thing is, because it might be tough to get the cast together for the four months you would need to make a series, is to try to get them together for four weeks sooner, and do the movie that is the story that we’ve been building up to in this show. And then, bring the series back after that. If not my decision, but it’s what I want to do. The reason I’m not just saying, let’s go do the series next, is because I’m worried it’ll take two years to make all those deals — a mess of people, a weird tease to all of us and the audience. So my goal is to do a movie for Netflix type thing, and then go into the series.”

Arrested Development Movie Is Moving Forward

Dreams DO come true. Not only have we had a new season of “Arrested Development” but we are also getting a feature film and I think my life is complete.  Mitch Hurwitz recently did an interview with Rolling Stone where he explained that he was indeed working on the movie and that everyone involved was excited.
